About This Trip
Dolenjska (Lower Carniola) is a Slovenian region that, in its essence, most closely resembles Tuscany — yet offers an authentic experience of lesser-known, hidden gems. At its heart lies the green Krka River, lined with castles, ancient towns, and mystical monasteries that still breathe in their own natural rhythm, far from the crowds. It is the cradle of the Iron Age Situla culture and the home of the unique Cviček wine, cherished by locals in their hilltop vineyard cottages (zidanice).
Our journey flows with the Krka. Instead of the fast highway, we choose the local road that winds right beside the river, passing dreamy villages and old mills where time seems to have stood still. We stop in Žužemberk, where the mighty castle of the Auersperg family still reigns over the river's limestone pools, before climbing into Novo mesto — the world capital of Iron Age situla art.
A stroll through the only water castle in Slovenia — Otočec Castle, sitting on an island in the middle of the green Krka — brings us to the day's highlight: a traditional lunch on Trška gora, the region's most famous vineyard hill. Amid breathtaking views of the Krka Valley, you taste local specialties paired with a glass of fresh Cviček, a wine that exists only in these lands. The tour concludes with an arrival in Ljubljana in the late afternoon.

Program
A Scenic Drive Through the Krka Valley & Žužemberk
We begin with a relaxed drive along the flow of the Krka River. Instead of the fast highway, we take the local road that winds right beside the water, offering the most beautiful contact with the nature of Dolenjska. The path leads through dreamy villages and past old mills, where time seems to have stood still. Our first major stop is in Žužemberk, where a mighty medieval castle reigns over the river's limestone pools — for centuries held by one of the most influential noble families, the Auerspergs.
Novo mesto — The Capital of Situlae and the River Bend
We continue to Novo mesto, which rises dramatically above a deep bend of the Krka River. The town is internationally recognized as the world capital of Iron Age situla art. A visit to the Museum of Dolenjska reveals an incredible wealth of finds — collections of amber and ornate bronze situlae that are a European phenomenon. A stroll through the old Main Square and the picturesque riverside district of Breg shows you why this town is often called the *"Rome of Dolenjska."*
Otočec Castle — Romance on a River Island
Otočec Castle is one of the most beautiful sights in Slovenia and the only water castle in the country, sitting majestically on an island in the middle of the green Krka. A stroll through the castle park, surrounded by swans and centuries-old trees, offers a perfect, almost fairytale moment. The castle still retains its medieval soul and Renaissance elegance.
Trška gora — Scenic Views and a Traditional Lunch
We ascend Trška gora, the most famous vineyard hill of the region, which despite its fame maintains its authenticity and peace. Nestled among the vineyards lies the option for an authentic Dolenjska lunch in one of the *zidanice* (vineyard cottages) or a traditional inn. Amid breathtaking views of the Krka Valley, taste local specialties — *štruklji*, game dishes, or the indigenous Krškopolje pork — all paired with a glass of fresh Cviček, a unique wine that can only be found in these lands.
Return Journey
A relaxing drive through the hills brings us back to Ljubljana in the late afternoon.
