Slovenian ancestry and genealogy tours

Discover your Slovenian roots, one place and one family story at a time.

A village name on an old document, a family photograph or a recipe kept alive overseas can be the beginning of a deeply personal journey. Genealogy tourism in Slovenia connects the search for family history with the landscapes, communities and cultural heritage that shaped earlier generations.

At Vitamia, we believe that discovering your roots is more than an ordinary holiday. It is a personal encounter with history, identity and ancestral heritage, bringing the past into conversation with the present.

Understanding the journeys that brought families abroad

Slovenia has a rich and often painful history of emigration. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, people left for different reasons, especially economic hardship and the search for work, but also political pressures. Each family’s circumstances deserve their own careful attention.

In Primorska under Italian Fascism, denationalisation policies, political persecution and economic pressures drove many Slovenes from their homes. This experience must be distinguished from other economic migrations and from the political emigration that followed the Second World War.

Immediately after the war in 1945, another wave left Slovenia, including people from central Slovenia. Political circumstances, fear of the new Communist authorities and the conditions of the post-war period were important reasons for departure. These histories can be sensitive, and we approach individual memories with care.

Slovenian heritage across the world

Slovenian communities took root in the United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Australia and many European countries. Across the distance, many families maintained the language, customs, faith and a sense of connection to their ancestors’ homeland. Today their descendants return to explore family roots, visit places of birth and understand the lives behind names and dates.

From family records to the places that matter

A private ancestry journey can bring together documentary research and time in the places your family knew. The programme is built around the information you already have and what you hope to discover.

Start with your family story

Share known names, approximate dates, place names and the questions that matter to you. Historical spellings and changing borders can affect how a place appears in family documents.

Explore records with a clear scope

We can discuss how archival material and parish registers might fit into your journey. Research, appointments and access depend on surviving records, institutional rules and privacy restrictions; the scope and any specialist help are agreed in advance.

Visit ancestral towns and villages

Walk through the places connected to your family and understand their wider history. Local customs, traditional food and stories of everyday life help turn a place on a family tree into a lived landscape.

Create a personal itinerary

Combine meaningful family places with cultural visits suited to your interests. We agree a realistic route, guiding arrangements and any transport before confirming your individual offer.

Begin your Slovenian family heritage journey

Tell us what you know about your Slovenian connection and what you would like to explore. Rok Jarc’s knowledge of history and geography and more than 25 years of guiding experience help place family stories in context. Every enquiry is individual: we cannot guarantee that a particular record, family home or living relative can be found or visited, but we can help shape a thoughtful journey from the available evidence.
