Taste the landscapes, traditions and stories behind Slovenian food.

Tailored enquiry: route, tastings, availability and price are confirmed in your offer.

Alpine dairy traditions, Mediterranean ingredients, Pannonian fields and Central European cooking meet in Slovenia. Geography and history have made regional food remarkably varied: almost every part of the country has dishes that tell a story about local work, celebrations and family life.

Our private culinary experiences connect those flavours with the places and people behind them. Explore a region on an existing tour or enquire about a tailored food experience, including a private Ljubljana Food Tour.

Traditional Slovenian cuisine: a journey through regional flavours

From everyday countryside cooking to festive baking, these dishes offer an introduction to the country’s culinary map.

Potica and the festive table

Potica is a rolled yeast-dough cake with fillings such as walnut or tarragon. Known across Slovenia, it is closely associated with Christmas, Easter and family celebrations, when recipes and baking skills pass between generations.

Easter: pirhi, ham, horseradish and potica

Decorated eggs, or pirhi, join ham, horseradish and potica on the Easter table. In Christian tradition the blessed foods connect the family meal with Christ’s suffering and resurrection; eggs evoke new life, while horseradish roots recall the nails of the Crucifixion. Local customs and decorations vary.

Ajdovi žganci, sauerkraut and sour turnips

Buckwheat žganci are small, crumbly pieces of cooked flour dough, a staple of rural cooking in several Slovenian regions. Fermented cabbage and turnips reflect the practical tradition of preserving the harvest for winter.

A slice of Prekmurje layered cake

Prekmurska gibanica and dödöle

Prekmurje’s layered gibanica combines poppy seed, curd cheese, walnut and apple fillings. Dödöle, made from potatoes and flour and commonly served with onion and sour cream, tell a more everyday story of the same region.

Idrijski žlikrofi

These distinctive potato-filled pasta pockets belong to Idrija’s culinary identity. They connect a memorable local flavour with the history of a town shaped by mercury mining and household ingenuity.

Tuhinjska fila and local favourites

Slovenia and the Michelin Guide

Slovenia received its first Michelin Guide selection in 2020, during the pandemic. It was an important milestone in international recognition of Slovenian gastronomy. Contemporary chefs continue the conversation between regional ingredients, inherited recipes and new techniques. Traditional cooking and fine dining offer different, complementary ways to understand the country.

Ljubljana Food Tour: a culinary journey across Slovenia

One City. Many Regions. A Culinary Journey Across Slovenia.

Let food shape your private walk through Ljubljana. Instead of a classic sightseeing-only itinerary, combine the history, architecture and landmarks of the old town with selected tastings that introduce different Slovenian regions. The city becomes a starting point for understanding the whole country.

Between stops, your guide connects what you see with what you taste: the influence of trade and neighbouring cultures, the importance of seasonal ingredients, and the place of food in family celebrations. A regional speciality is more than a name on a menu when you know the landscape and tradition behind it.

This is a personal way to explore Ljubljana at a pace suited to your party. Tell us your preferred date, group size, food interests and any dietary requirements. We will discuss a suitable route and confirm the tasting stops, duration, inclusions, availability and price in an individual offer. The dishes described on this page illustrate Slovenian cuisine; they are not a promised tasting menu.

Discover the capital and symbolically travel across Slovenia through its flavours, without leaving Ljubljana.
